Sunshine? YES PLEASE!
So I have finished school for the 09-10 year and have decided against doing summer school. Why? Because all I want to do this summer is make lots and lots and lots of ART! My friend is going to New York for the summer and I am going to sublet her studio for the few months that she is gone. I cannot wait! The last time I had a studio space was April of 2008. Five of my mates from OCAD and myself rented out a 300 square foot space down in the art centre of Toronto. This sounds crazy, 300 square feet for six people? It was awesome. There were only about two or three of us in there at any given time and though that space was disgusting, (we had rats, cockroaches, what have you) the light in there was incredible and it was such a happy place filled with six hopeful artists! We called ourselves the D6 (our studio was on Dufferin Street… we thought it was cool- short and catchy!). Anyways a year passed and our lease was up, real life set in, some of us went back to school, some of us got full-time jobs and that was the end of the D6. I am catching myself saying that it was the end, but who knows… we are all still making art… keep a look out!
I cannot complain, I have a really great space to make art in right now, however it is the same as my living space and that can be quite hard. I have blank canvases staring at me all day and they really intimidate me sometimes! Not to mention that I am primarily an oil painter and I am breathing that stuff in all day and all night and that is definitely not so good for my health. Anyways, I am sure you are thinking…”gees cry me a river Carla, you get to paint all day!” And yes it is true I do and for this I am more grateful everyday.
So what is on my plate?! Well I have two commissions, one of which I started today. This one is a 6′ x 4′ abstract landscape to be done in black and white, inspired by Franz Kline. Here is one of his paintings:
I just love him. So dramatic, so assertive.
The second commission is one of a dog – Teddi. It is always such an uplifting experience painting puppies so I am very excited to get started on that one too.
Well, that is all for today, I am hoping that my title of this blog really gives the sky a message…shine some sun you silly sky!
